My journey to the wellness and chiropractic profession has various twists and turns, however one major influential factor seemed to expedite the process. It was 7th grade when my guidance counsellor decided my consistently poor academic performance might require careful review. My lack of interest and inability to concentrate was immediately labelled as pathological, and soon thereafter I was knighted with the diagnosis of ADD/ADHD. Remember, this was the 90’s and not many people were thinking outside the pharmacological box, especially when it came to childhood neurodevelopmental disorders. I was prescribed Adderall and instructed to take 1 pill/day for the rest of my life. I was young and didn’t think to question any of this, so I simply went along with it. It wasn’t until attending college at Umass Amherst, in Massachusetts where I began to question the effectiveness of my treatment. The endured side effects were becoming overwhelming and I knew there must be a different approach available. I was majoring in Pre-medicine and Biology as well as running a Personal Training/Lifestyle business which provided me with the insight and resources to research alternative treatment options. Eventually I was able to identify a more sustainable and effective method to treat my ADD/ADHD. It ended up being pretty straightforward, as I simply adjusted my lifestyle to maximize what I now consider the foundations of health – exercise, nutrition, sleep, mindset, etc. The results were incredible and I was able to via the guidance of my primary care eliminate the prescription medication. My fascination with these subjects evolved into more complex and specific ways to improve health including Functional Medicine, Chiropractic Medicine, Functional Neurology and many more. I haven’t experienced any symptoms of ADD/ADHD since college. After experiencing such a dramatic shift in my overall well-being, I felt the need to identify a profession which would allow me to share this knowledge. Today, treating children and adults with ADD/ADHD, as well as other chronic conditions continues to be one of the most fulfilling passions in my life. Currently, I run the Neurometabolic Center of Chicago and practice as a Neurometabolic specialist and Chiropractic physician assisting patients with chronic degenerative conditions such as Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, Diabetes Type 2, Peripheral Neuropathy, Vertigo/Balance/Dizziness, IBS & Crohn’s Disease, Attention Deficit Disorder, Autism, Multiple Sclerosis, Permanent Fat Loss, Autoimmunity, Female Hormone Imbalances, Headache & Migraine, as well as several other conditions. I look forward to learning your story and collaborating together on your journey towards attaining optimal health. It is my intention to provide you with hope and the knowledge you deserve to place your health, back into your hands. In health, Dr. David St. Jean
