Car Accident Related Injuries Probably the most common injury patients experience when in a car accident is “Whiplash”. Whiplash is the common known name for a neck injury caused by rapid flexion/extension movement. The muscles go into spasm, the ligaments are pulled, and discs in the neck may be herniated. Symptoms Include Loss of Neck Range of Motion Pain Headaches Jutting of the Head Forward Swelling Jaw Pain. Dr. Maher will order X-rays, and/or an MRI if you are involved in an accident to rule out fractures, and severe disc herniation, or other major injuries if she feels its medically necessary. Physical Therapy, medical massage, and chiropractic can help restore postural disturbances of the neck, decrease muscle spasm and pressure on discs. Dr. Maher and her therapists will discuss home exercises and sleeping positions to help in the healing process. Dr. Maher works together with many pain management specialists, neurologists, and orthopedics to determine the best course of care after an accident. Mid and Low back problems may also occur. If you have been injured in an accident, Dr. Maher will perform a detailed examination, including MRI, CT scans or X-rays as needed. She is available to come in for patients outside of her regular hours, so please feel free to call our office line if you would like an immediate examination. Whiplash Neck Pain Low Back Pain TMJ- Jaw (Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction) The jaw itself has a joint on each side. Dr. Maher is trained on gently adjusting these joints. Mis aligned TMJ may cause pain, clicking, or inability to open or close jaw. Many patients also experience headaches, ear aches, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), or fullness in the ears. Dr. Maher may adjust the jaw and/or perform stretching and manual massage to the jaw muscles. There are muscles on the outside around the cheeks, there are also muscles on the inside of the mouth. In this case, gloves are used and Dr Maher will gently massage the gums and Pterygoid muscles on the inside of the mouth.
