Dr. McNelis is a graduate of University of Illinois, Champaign. She received her Doctor of Optometry degree from Indiana University College of Optometry in 1990. She completed a residency in Hospital Based Optometry and Low Vision at North Chicago Veteran's Administration Hospital. Dr. McNelis is a member of the American Optometric Association, Cornea and Contact Lens Section, and the Illinois Optometric Association, and holds a Fellowship in the American Academy of Optometry. She is certified in several specialty contact lens systems, including Corneal Refractive Therapy and Synergeyes Hybrid contact lenses. Dr. McNelis has enjoyed multiple practice environments, beginning with a multidisciplinary medical center performing primary eye care and consultations for complex visual problems. She later joined the ophthalmology practice of Eye Surgeons and Consultants in Chicago, specializing in the management of diseases and disorders of the cornea. This role had a heavy emphasis on the fitting of complex contact lenses for diseased or irregular corneas, as well as participating in the care of many refractive procedures, including ALK, Refractive Keratotomy, Lasik and PRK, as well as cataract and corneal transplant surgery. In 2001 she joined Doctors For Visual Freedom with Dr. Mark Golden, which specialized in laser refractive surgery. She has co-managed over 15,000 laser refractive patients, and is a happy lasik patient since 2001. She is a contributing author to a reference textbook and a clinical practice guide, and has given numerous presentations at local and national meetings. In 2007 she went into private practice and enjoys seeing a variety of patients of all ages. She continues to fit specialty contact lenses including CRT and multifocals, and remains active in the co-management of refractive surgery, as well as treating a number of ocular disorders such as Dry Eye Syndrome, diabetes and glaucoma.
