Biography

Heather graduated from the University of Western Ontario with BA of Kinesiology with honours. Following this, Heather went on to do a Masters of Physical Therapy and is now a fellow of the Canadian Manual Manipulative physiotherapy (FCAMPT). This is the most advanced level of education in orthopedic physiotherapy one can obtain. Since graduating, not only has Heather become an FCAMPT, she has also completed her acupuncture training through the Acupuncture Foundation of Canada. Heather’s treatment style involves using clinical reasoning, combined with an evidence based approach to provide the best quality care meanwhile achieving optimal success with each of her patients. Involved in her manual therapy techniques, she includes soft tissue release, mobilization, manipulation, and addition she employees exercise, shockwave, IFC, GUNN IMS, acupuncture, and laser therapy.

Why should patients choose you as their provider instead of others in the area?

I find this question difficult to answer as every therapist is different in personality, education and approach. I work alongside many talented people and Toronto is abundant with many talented practitioners. My strengths match well with people who are looking for compassionate, personalized care, and an approach that is effective. I do perform treatments that can include manipulation and acupuncture needling but I use them in a conservative way.

What are the top 3 treatments that you focus on?

Manual and manipulative physiotherapy - treating stiffness in joints and soft tissue to return proper mechanics Release of tightness in the nervous system and muscles using dry needling and the Gunn IMS approach (completing certification Fall 2017) Exercises and Education of my clients to empower them to self manage and treat the injury. I work closely with Rehab Pilates which has changed my body and my approach.

What are you proud of in your practice?

The fact that I am passionate about my profession and love what I do. I feel like this is reflected in my work and my patients pick up on it. I've been established at Rebalance for the past 3 years and seeing returning patients, or their co-workers, friends or family just because they are speaking highly of me and my skills makes me proud.

Which cases do you enjoy treating? Why?

Lower back and shoulders. I think this is partly because they are both really common and I have treated a lot in my 8 years of practice. I also feel like my understanding and advanced training has been really focused on the spinal area which is self explanatory for the low back but I will make the claim a lot of shoulder injuries are a result of the neck and the upper back dysfunction. I feel like I have had some success stories with complex chronic lower back patients who have seen multiple practitioners but it's the work that we do that is able to get them to their max recovery and that's a pretty awesome feeling.
