Biography

Waymen Wong, graduated with his Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree in 2002 with high honours from the University of St. Augustine in Florida, USA. After a year long post graduate study in manual therapy he sat for and successfully passed a 2-day intensive written, oral, and practical examination to receive his Manual Therapy Certificate (MTC). In 2003 he moved to Seattle Washington and had a practice at the Ballard Sports Medicine Clinic working in a team with orthopaedic doctors and surgeons treating college and professional level athletes. During his time in Seattle he completed an orthopaedic manual therapy residency program with the Ola Grimsby Institute, and in 2005 a post-doctoral fellowship in Chicago, receiving well over 1500 hours of residency training and 1000 hours of advanced fellowship level training. In 2006 he sat for and passed his residency and fellowship exams to become a Fellow in both the Canadian and American Academies for Manual Therapy (FAAOMPT, FCAMPT). Later that year he returned to Vancouver, where he is originally from, and has practiced in a chronic pain clinic, as well as various sports and orthopaedic clinics. Before physiotherapy, Waymen’s first degree was in kinesiology from Simon Fraser University. As a kinesiologist he worked in gym settings as a personal trainer, and in rehabilitation settings helped patients with return to work programs and post MVA injuries. Today, Waymen continues to be involved with the Ola Grimsby Institute through assisting post-graduate residency programs, being a clinical mentor to residency students, and coordinating continuing education courses in Canada for physiotherapists. He is a contributing author in the Orofacial Pain and TMJ section of an academic textbook (Science, Theory and Clinical Application in Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy: Scientific Therapeutic Exercise Progressions (STEP): The Neck and Upper Extremity), has held classes for physiotherapists as well as dentists in the areas of manual therapy and TMJ, and has been involved with the Physiotherapy Association of BC (PABC) having sat on the Extended Scope of Practice Task Force and the Professional Development Advisory Council. He is a member of the American Academy of Manual Therapy, American Academy of Orofacial Pain, Canadian Physiotherapy Association, Physiotherapy Association of BC, and the Canadian Academy of Manual Physical Therapy. Waymen has specialized training in treating temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain. His philosophy is that even sports performance can be greatly affected by breathing and jaw dysfunction as these have profound effects on postural biomechanics, power generation, and core stability. Optimizing and balancing the body from head to toe must include proper evaluation of all these systems.
