Dr. Zuleidy "Zuly" Fernandez's journey in dentistry is as inspiring as it is unique. Born in Cuba, she immigrated to the United States with her family at the age of seven, embarking on a path that would lead her to become a respected leader in periodontal and implant surgery. Brave Beginnings At just seven years old, Dr. Zuly and her parents fled Cuba on a perilous journey aboard an overcrowded 19-foot boat. Rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard, their courage and determination would lay the foundation for an extraordinary future. In those early days at the refugee center, a donated piano became her first American friend - sparking a passion that would intertwine with her future practice. Finding Her Voice At New World School of the Arts High School, Dr. Zuly's loves of healing and music flourished. The resilience learned during her refugee journey transformed into determination, driving her to excel both academically and artistically. Those early piano lessons from the refugee center bloomed into a profound appreciation for how art could heal. Breaking Barriers While excelling at Miami Dade College, Edison State College, and Florida Gulf Coast University, she shattered glass ceilings as the first Hispanic female student government president. Her own immigrant experience inspired her to found her first non-profit organization, committed to helping others overcome their own barriers. The Journey to Dentistry Her path led her to the University of Puerto Rico's School of Dental Medicine, where excellence wasn't just a goal - it was a standard. Graduating with highest honors, she earned both her dental degree and prestigious recognitions from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and Women Dentists. Mastering Her Craft The pursuit of excellence took her to NYU Langone Medical Center and the Mayo Clinic. Here, she earned dual post-graduate degrees in Periodontology and Biomedical Sciences, receiving the highest honor given to periodontal residents. Throughout her advanced training, music remained her constant companion and source of inspiration. Achieving Excellence Becoming a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology marked a pinnacle of professional achievement. But for Dr. Zuly, true excellence meant combining technical precision with the artistry she'd cultivated since those first notes on the refugee center piano. Finding Home in Cape Coral Bringing together her artistic soul and surgical precision, Dr. Zuly chose Cape Coral as the place to build her practice. She made sure a grand piano would be central to her office - a symbol of her journey and a daily reminder of how far she'd come from that first donated piano.
