Dr. Jinyeop Kim

If you had asked my eleven-year-old self where life would take me, I never would have imagined that one day I would return to the very community that welcomed my family and open a dental practice of my own. My story begins in Incheon, South Korea. Like many children growing up there, my days followed a familiar rhythm. I attended school Monday through Saturday, followed by hours at after-school academies until the sun went down. Education was important, and my parents worked tirelessly to give my older sister and me every opportunity they could. Looking back, I realize they were doing everything they could to prepare us for a successful future, even if it meant sacrificing their own comforts along the way. My parents were loving, but they were also very intentional in how they raised us. There were two things we simply were not allowed to do: lie or be picky eaters. They believed honesty and gratitude were habits that would shape our character for life. They also taught us the importance of respecting others. Every time I walked through our apartment complex, I was expected to bow to every elder I passed. As a child, I didn't always understand why—but I certainly didn't mind when one of my neighbors rewarded my manners with an ice cream on a hot summer afternoon. Those small moments taught me that kindness and respect often come back in unexpected ways. Then one summer, everything changed. My parents began packing our apartment. “We’re moving to America," they told me. At eleven years old, I had no idea what that meant. I couldn't imagine leaving behind everything familiar or how dramatically my life was about to change. Our family settled in Suwanee, Georgia. We went from living in a small apartment in Korea to a house in America. To an eleven-year-old boy, it felt like we had moved into a palace. I didn't speak a word of English, but children have an incredible ability to adapt. I went to school, made friends through games on the playground, watched countless hours of television after school, and spent afternoons playing football in the backyard with neighborhood kids. Little by little, without even realizing it, I learned the language, embraced a new culture, and began to call Georgia home. As a child, I simply thought life was exciting. As an adult, I finally understood what it had cost. My parents left behind everything they knew—their careers, their friends, their extended family, and the life they had built in Korea—so that my sister and I could have opportunities they never had. They sacrificed their present so we could have a brighter future. Today, when I look at my life, I know that every opportunity I've been given exists because of their courage, countless sleepless nights, and unwavering belief that their children could build a better life. That realization continues to humble me every day. As I continued my education at the University of Georgia, I spent my summers working a variety of jobs and gaining experience in dental clinics. Along the way, I met mentors who generously shared not only their knowledge, but also their life stories. I studied alongside friends who inspired one another to dream bigger and work harder. Those experiences slowly shaped my desire to become a dentist. By my fourth year of dental school, I had opportunities to practice all over the United States. Many communities offered exciting possibilities, but every time I pictured my future, my heart kept leading me back to the same place. I wanted to be close enough to celebrate birthdays around the dinner table, spend holidays with my family, and be present for the people who had sacrificed so much to help me become the person I am today. Returning to Suwanee wasn't just a career decision. It was a life decision. When it came time to open my own practice, choosing the name was one of the easiest decisions I made.
